Sebastian Rimestad is a religious studies scholar at the University of Leipzig/Germany with a grant from the German Science Foundation (DFG Heisenberg). He completed his PhD at the University of Erfurt in 2012 with a thesis called The Challenges of Modernity to the Orthodox Church in Estonia and Latvia, 1917-1940 (published with Peter Lang) and worked as a postdoc at the same university until 2018. His second book, Orthodox Christian Identity in Western Europe, came out with Routledge in 2021. His research focuses on modern developments in the Orthodox Church, as well as religious conversion and changing constructions of religious identity since the 18th century.
